| | | | | | | | | STATEMENT OF ISSUE | In the past year, there has been a marked increase in hate crimes, attacks, and violence against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The purpose of the proposed resolution condemns such acts of discrimination against this community and others and urges residents to denounce this unacceptable conduct and hate to help keep us all safe during this pandemic and beyond. |

| | | | | | | | | DISCUSSION | As our country continues its struggle against racial divides, we are now confronted with the alarming and unacceptable targeting of many in our AAPI communities in California and across the nation during the pandemic. In the past year, there has been a marked increase in hate crimes, attacks, and violence against the AAPI communities. In the past year, hate crimes against this community has increased by nearly 150% in major cities with 44% of incidents reported occurring in California.
Together, we have a responsibility and a moral obligation to confront and eliminate institutional discrimination against all people, regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. This resolution will denounce acts of discrimination and violence against the AAPI communities and any others which may be experiencing such unacceptable acts based on hate, bigotry, or prejudice. The resolution also encourages our citizens to join the City in condemning this type of behavior and conduct.
